Mission

The Emergency Corps program is a national education and training outreach that works to empower American businesses and their employees to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies of any kind.

Need

While the impacts of terrorism may remain foremost in our minds, there are also fires, hazardous materials incidents, workplace violence, hurricanes, tornadoes, severe storms, explosions, utility outages, transportation crises and other emergencies.

Each of these emergencies can take their toll in employee injuries, lives and significant economic losses to organizations.

Whatever the threat, American enterprise can dramatically limit injuries and property damage as well as return more quickly to normal operations if the organization takes steps to prepare, train and plan ahead.

The Emergency Corps program focuses on providing training and other resources to businesses and other organizations to better prepare their workplaces and employees for emergencies.

Strategy

Expert insight forms the foundation for all program initiatives. Emergency Corps personnel have developed their programs after substantial interface with and assistance from FEMA's Emergency Management Institute at the National Emergency Training Center. In addition, significant contributions and insights have been provided by NYPD's Counter-Terrorism Division, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the New York State Office of Emergency Management (SEMO), the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Private sector professionals have also provided substantial assistance; these include professionals from Merrill Lynch, American Express, Consolidated Edison, Bank of New York, and Dow Jones. Subject matter experts from these organizations often participate in the programs presented by the Emergency Corps.

Actionable strategies are central to all program efforts. Emergency management is not a theoretical endeavor. Rather, it is one upon which the lives of employees and the continuity of an entire organization may rely. Program offerings emphasize sample plan elements, checklists, other job aids and ongoing online support.

History

While program personnel had substantial activity prior the tragedies of September 11, 2001, these events were the catalyst for the development and initiation of a wider national outreach in emergency management and business continuity. Hundreds of private sector organizations have participated to date in Emergency Corps training programs as have public sector organizations (including Federal Reserve System, Centers for Disease Control, US Army, US Coast Guard, NYPD, FDNY, various municipal, county and provincial governments.

The Emergency Corps Program has also been honored to have worked closely with the Federal 9-11 Commission in both research efforts as well as training key Commission staff.

We Gratefully Acknowledge Consultation with FEMA, FBI, OSHA, NY SEMO, NYC OEM, FDNY, NYPD In the Development of The Emergency Corps Program
